John and Linda Coward and Roy and Mary Brindley from South Woodham Ferrers U3A in Essex visited the Greek Island in 2016 where they met tour guide Denia Vythoulka
Denia was interested in what people did in the UK when they retired, as there was very little on Zakynthos to encourage people of retirement age to learn new things and socialise. She was fascinated to hear what was available through U3A.
After getting in touch with national office, Denia met in Athens with Professor Nikos Mistriotis, a member of the International Committee AUITA. Subject Adviser Marcia Humphries spent three weeks with Denia & family at Easter and the idea was discussed further.
Marcia said, “On my return, I wrote an article for the U3A in-house magazine, Third Age Matters. This somehow reached former British U3A members now living on the Island. They have contacted Denia and are working with her to bring U3A to Zakynthos”.
Plans are being prepared for a pre-setup conference in the Autumn, with a view to ZU3A being launched next January. If you want to know more please contact Marcia at email@example.com
