Sharing skills from a finance career with the u3a movement as a u3a Treasurer
For Volunteers Week, we hear from Dacorum u3a member Henry who uses his finance background to contribute to the u3a movement as a local u3a Treasurer and nationally, as a member of the finance committee.
I am a Chartered Accountant - my background is in audit, risk and IT security. I volunteered for 25 years with ICAEW (the chartered accountants’ professional body), mainly in their IT community. I was also on their audit committee for 3 ½ years.
I am a member of a number of groups at Dacorum u3a, including badminton, Money Matters, industrial history, military history and science & technology.
On retirement I signed up for the audit and assurance committee of another chartered professional body and then spotted the article in the u3a magazine, looking for members for the finance committee. I was pleased to be selected and have been in that role since November 2023. When my local u3a, Dacorum, was looking for a new treasurer, I thought that this would assist me in the Third Age Trust role and vice versa.
I like to be able to give back by applying the skills and experience gained over my career.
u3a is very much about getting out as much as you can put in, whatever that may be. You do not need to be the local Chair (or Treasurer!), but there are always situations where your u3a is looking for assistance, whatever your skills.
I have enjoyed it all so far.
