Two awards for Basingstoke Old Basing u3a

11 July 2024

Christine, Publicity and PR Officer for Basingstoke and Old Basing u3a, recounts how, in an already momentous anniversary year for her u3a, they also achieved two awards.

As our u3a volunteer PR & Publicity Officer, I couldn’t have imagined a more amazing celebration of our 25th Anniversary this June.

Firstly we achieved a local award at the Destination Basingstoke, Proud of our Place Awards, winning the Community Project Award on 6 June 2024.

This award recognises all the hard work our volunteers, group leaders and committee have put into running our u3a for Basingstoke residents.

It looks at specific achievements under Community Project such as goals, reaching 1,000 members from a humble start of 48, introducing new technology and website including our new members portal. As well as the range and depth of group activities on offer to members on a daily basis, we have over 80 groups to choose from.

A second award was the icing on the cake and well deserved at the prestigious Group Leisure & Travel Awards held on 27 June in London, Joyce Cook, u3a Basingstoke Old Basing Group Travel Organiser Award (GTO).

Joyce is one of our members who has been with our u3a from the start, bringing with her a vast knowledge of the travel industry. Setting up, as group leader our Excursions & Holidays Group, this has grown from 70 to over 400 members.

She has taken our Basingstoke residents all over the World and UK, tirelessly arranging different trips, so they never travel to the same places within a 3 year period.

Joyce is such a star and a shining example of what volunteering with the u3a should be. A well-deserved award, as Joyce really does care about our members and said “her reward is seeing members laugh and enjoying her trips, making new friends and sharing their experiences.”
