Support for German Language Study Groups
21 February 2022

Alistair, Subject Adviser for German, discusses the activities he runs for members and German group leaders.

I have for several years, run an E-mail-based Forum for Groups. This is dedicated to leaders, or nominated members only in place of leaders, of u3a German language study groups, to enable exchange of experiences and good practice and permit questions. For the last seven years it has been a resource used by over 100 Group Leaders, with an average of around 15 E-mails per month posted to it, which are seen by all members, enabling the dissemination of successful ideas as well as answers to common questions. All history can be viewed on its Web site, split roughly by subject.

Out of this has grown the “Lesestunden” (reading hours), run by me and a Group Leader. These are aimed at those with a reading level of B1 and above, are run monthly on Zoom with two identical sittings, in which 2 pre-distributed stories are read aloud and then discussed. These are not limited to Group Leaders and anyone can take part by sending an E-mail to the SA. The regular attendees are now around 25 per month, with over 50 having attended at one point.
