A celebration all round Wales

Plans are being laid to bring together the experiences and learning that U3A members can enjoy from their contact with Wales’ fantastic coastline and border country. This idea will feature in the all Wales conference on 9th May 2018 and begin to bring together contributions for a major exhibition early in 2019.

Wales is the only country which people can walk round, and what a source of inspiration it is. Coastal Wales was named the ‘best region on earth’ by the Lonely Planet Travel Guide and Offa’s Dyke is Britain’s longest ancient monument, with a named path running for 182 miles between Chepstow and Prestatyn.

There is a Welsh proverb “Benthyg dros amser byr yw popeth a geir yn y byd hwn” (rough translation – Everything you have in this world is just borrowed for a short time). The U3A in Wales now wants people to share and pass on the coast and border experiences they have.

Have you walked a section of the coast path that you could add to a map which will see U3A members walk the whole 872 mile route? Enjoyed a visit to an industrial, archaeological, or heritage site? Sat and soaked up a favourite viewpoint or harbour or beach? Sung Ar Llan y Mor or used seascapes for art and craft work? Planned talks and visits linked to marine flora and fauna environments? Spent time in a coastal or border town or city? Let us know!

There are engineering wonders, from the Menai Strait to the Severn crossings; historic pubs and churches and gardens and docklands; and energy history from mining and nuclear sites to wind and solar farms. The list is endless but the shape of our exhibition will be shaped by the things we can borrow from the experiences of U3A members.
