Barbara French talks about the canal group at Stourbridge u3a which ran pre-pandemic.
During spring, summer and early autumn we walk along the canal towpaths, with a well informed leader pointing out various features of historical and environmental interest. It keeps us fit too! During winter months we meet indoors to learn about the history of our canal system, canal builders, ongoing canal projects etc. Now of course we use use zoom.
We also have trips to places of interest such as Foxton locks and the Anderton Boat lift, always enjoyable social occasions and informative too.
On walks members commented on the amount of litter, our answer "We'll litter pick" Armed with litter pickers from the pound shop and a landing net, off we went. Pre lockdown we had 4 expeditions last year, one to the Delph locks another to the Waterfront at the Merry Hill Centre, followed by the canal at Wordsley. We also joined with a group of Canal and River Trust volunteers to tidy a stretch of canal at Stourport.
Roll on the end of lockdown, we'll be out again, litter pickers at the ready!
