VE Day Celebratory Poem

VE Day Celebratory Poem
08 May 2020

Annie Roebuck, a member of Congleton U3A, wrote this poem for the 75th anniversary of VE Day

Shout loud, ring bells, give thanks today, send balloons into the air

Despite our social distancing we can celebrate with flare!

VE day is upon us, and how thankful we can be

Because of others who fought and won, our lives have liberty

I never knew the countless men who gave their lives for me

I never knew the bombs or planes that flew across the sea

I never knew the cost each family had to bear

To give us hope to live in peace, without threat of despair

But I do know individuals who fought that awful war

Who lost their comrades, friends and lovers, the dreadful load they bore

So that I, and you, could live in freedom, and democracy

Lives given turned that sorry state into victory

And now today our spirits rise to the threat of another foe

We will not waste the life we have, that was fought for long ago

We meet this new imposter and just like captain Tom

We'll steadily march forward 'til another war is won

So at this time as we look back, in thankfulness and grace

We take that spirit of determined force, and together set our face

So shout loud, ring bells, give thanks today, send balloons into the air

Despite our social distancing let's celebrate with flare!
