Fun at forty for Derby u3a
Jane from Derby u3a shares the exciting programme of events planned to celebrate its 40th year.
It's 40 years since Derby u3a hit the decks running, and the pace has accelerated year on year. Anniversary celebrations to mark these four decades are underway, with a full programme of activities planned throughout 2025.
The first is a challenge for more than 500 members to initiate eight activities over the coming months. Each pursuit, under the banner of 'Try Something New', will be led by one of the letters, or digit, in the title of Derby u3a.
One member set the pace, defying frost, freeze and fog to achieve three activities within the first two weeks of January! Jenny achieved the 'Y' by joining the online yoga group, the 'D' by dancing during the Classic Rock group, and the '3' by attending 3 Derby u3a groups in one day. "It's a bit of fun," says Jenny, "keeps the brain ticking over!""
Another anniversary event will be held in April when most of Derby u3a's 40+ groups will come together to showcase their talents in a celebration extravaganza. There will be quizzes, presentations, singing and creativity at The Wardwick, a 19th century grade II listed building that has long stood as one of Derby's most iconic buildings.
"The April party will acknowledge all the terrific work done by our members," says Alison, a spearheader of the anniversary celebrations. "It's a chance to get involved, however briefly, with other groups in a fun way whilst mingling and enjoying the social aspect, which is so critical to every u3a. Members can move between wine tasting and real ale; pickleball to writing for pleasure; stop off at painting for beginners, or examine fossils with added rock observing. With at least 28 groups taking part, it will be noisy, fun and fully interactive. There's even going to be a quiet corner for those seeking recovery from the energy that will electrify the historic building."
The celebrations continue with a Party in the Park in June and culminate with a round up event before Christmas when all that has been achieved will be shared. At the final event, those who have completed their eight activities challenge will be rewarded with recognition.
"Derby u3a will enter its fifth decade stronger and more connected" says Alison. "Now, more than ever, we need to feel associated with others, to be active, and to enjoy getting together to share, learn, or to experience new things in a relaxed and fun way."
